Random Giveaway

Well, when it rains it pours. So, yes, I had sick kids this week and a dog with a foxtail buried in her ear and as the big capper to my week my laptop that has MY LIFE on it, got a really bad virus. So now I'm sharing hubby's desktop. He was about ready to divorce me when I mentioned putting firefox on it. However, he did download Adobe Digital Editions so I can read my huge ass e-book tbr pile on his computer whilst mine is....under the weather. Compromise, it's a beautiful thing :P

So, because I've had some negative crap happening this last week, I have decided to spread positive crap vibes and do a little giveaway. After all, I want to share things that make me happy with you all in the hopes that they will brighten your day, too.

In that spirit I am going to do a drawing for a random winner of Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. This book is awesome and really brings home the point that we should never take life or our loved ones for granted. Also, it's the first book I've given an A+ to and I think that should be celebrated. My review is here.

I've Been MIA

So, I know I've kinda fallen down on my blogging duties as of late (I am prepared to assume the position and take my punishment...), but here's why.

I spent a lovely weekend at the LA Times Book Festival. It was beautiful weather and I was surrounded by books and good company and it was just a really fun time. They had a great children's section at the festival and I apparently did a good mommy moment when I bought my kids a science book that shows them how to make everything from sail cars to bubbling potions and finger print ninjas. They are very excited to crack that baby open and get their mad scientist on.

I met and was reunited with some really great people (shout out to Reece, Ericka and fam, Terese, Megan & co, and Jen) and we had great food, good Sake and some really great conversation. I was so relaxed when I came back that I was practically jelly.

Unfortunately, I came back to kids with colds and trying to plan a b-day party for my littlest. Party planning for a group of 4-5 year olds and their parents is enough to make your head pop. I have nothing but respect (and some hate) for those moms and dads that make it look so frickin easy.

So, that's kinda where I'm at now. I'm recovering from too much fun and planning the party, nursing the kiddies and trying to catch up on my reading and reviewing. Hopefully we'll get back to a *kinda* schedule soon.

My Rants Are So Big, My Own Blog Can't Contain Them......

So my rants, much like my booty, are just too much for one place to handle. I'm over at Wicked Little Pixie's Blog today and we're ranting about pet peeves with female characters. Ok, mostly I'm ranting, but does that surprise anyone? I mean really?

I'm Impatiently Waiting.....

Zoë Martinique's life hasn't been ordinary for quite awhile. First she developed the ability to travel outside her body at will-where she encountered some seriously weird things. Things that left her with powers that she didn't really want or need. Still, a person can get used to almost anything- even being a Wraith. Though more often than not, it plays serious havoc with her love life.

But for once, Zoë is glad of her abilities. Bodies are showing up all over Atlanta, drained of blood. They're beings from another astral plane, called Revenants-and they're being stalked by her old enemy, the Phantasm. The Revenants are hardly the nicest of creatures-but to preserve the cosmic balance, Zoë will need to put everything on the line to save them...

Revenant is the 4th book in Phaedra Weldon's Zoe Martinique Series and a lot has happened in the previous three. If you're interested in starting this Urban Fantasy series, I would suggest that you start with book one, Wraith (Zoe Martinique, Book 1). Zoe is a pretty likable character with an interesting support cast. The premise is fairly unique and I've enjoyed this series quite a bit so far.

Revenant will be out June 1 this year. If you are an Urban Fantasy fan then I suggest you check out this series and mark your calendar for the newest release.

Review: Promise Me Tonight by Sara Lindsey

Isabella is determined to marry James...

Isabella Weston has loved James Sheffield for as long as she can remember. Her come-out ball seems the perfect chance to make him see her in a new light.

Promise Me Tonight is a pretty formulaic read. That's not necessarily a bad thing. There are times that I seek out those types of stories as almost a comfort thing. The problem I had with this though, was that the main couple just didn't really work for me. There were moments that I could see their past as kids together merge with their adult feelings for each other and those were lovely moments where they worked as a couple, however there weren't enough of those.

Izzie's single minded obsession with James is a bit off putting for me. She has loved this guy since she was six years old and while that could be cute, it was a little annoying for me in some ways.

James' whole, "I had a rough childhood (not as rough as some regency heroes) so I will never ever love anyone" issues were also over done a bit I think. He treats her horribly because of them and then when he shows up all sorry and wanting to make it work, she's just supposed to forgive and forget and move on. I really wanted to see him crawl a bit more, but that's just me.

Where the characters really shine for me are in their relationships with family and friends. James relationship with the Weston family is really great and his discussions with his friends feel more interesting and real than his relationship with Isabella. Izzie's relationships with her mom, Aunt and siblings are super fun to watch. Her Aunt Kate was a crack up and her mom and sister were fun characters as well. I also loved her dad and her older brother, Hal. This family is a very tight knit and loving family with a great sense of humor and they have each other's backs when it comes down to it, which made them a great family to read about.

Overall, I felt that the story was a bit too predictable, the lead couple did grow and work on their issues but they weren't a very enjoyable couple for me. The strongest point in the story for me was the Weston family and the lead characters' friends. They made the hero and heroine more interesting and likable and they themselves were fun and interesting.

My final grade for this is a C+. This is going to be a series revolving around the Weston family and I think there's a lot to work with there. Ms. Lindsey has potential and as she tells the stories of more of the family, I hope that the series will improve with each book.
