So, I've been evaluating my reading preferences and habits and comparing them to other readers' and bloggers' recommendations and I've come to a startling conclusion: I don't seem to read male authors.....dun dun duuuuuun.
Being the curious and slightly anal retentive person that I am, I find I must question why this is. I also seem to listen to more female singers than male although, I do listen to more male performers than I read male authors (this feels like the whole set up for a psychoanalysis right here) and I want to rectify the situation. I even once read a western romance written by a man. Yessir, I did. But that was a while ago and other than classics I read when I was younger, I'm not remembering many male authors that I've read.
So, I come to you, my faithful friends, to help me rectify this situation. What male authors do you read and recommend? I'm probably looking more for UF, but I can also do other genres if you peak my interest enough (ha! That sounds dirty). Help me out here and give me an excuse to add to my scary tbr pile. :P

Hey you! Thanks for leaving me some on KC's blog. I commented back. But anyways: The only two male authors I read are James Patterson the Maximum Ride series (I guess this is YA and a little less steamy) and Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. Oh how I love me some Jack. He is a kick ass hero that is just a regular guy. If I could give you some advice on the series, read "Die Trying" first. It is the 2nd in the series, but my fave. You don't miss much from book one "Killing Floor" and I really think KF was the worst one in the whole set.
Thanks for missing me *hugs*
Keith Melton's Blood Vice is a great UF and the sequel is coming out sometime this year.
I also LOVE Mark Henry's Amanda Feral books..you must read them!!!
I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan myself...
Jim Butcher for UF - Harry Dresden series.
Also try Charlie Huston for vampire noir. Simply awesome. Starts with Already Dead.
Simon R Green's Nightside series is great, if very Brit-centric.
Terry Pratchett for comedic fantasy.
Jim Butcher is my ultimate go to guy and in my top 5 fave authors of all time :) Love Harry Dresden Series.
After that I like Keith Melton and Anton Strout. I have a list of ones to get to that include Charlie Huston and Simon R Green as well.
I'm partial to some of RA Salvatore's works, James Clemens, and Michael Romkey
I have always enjoyed the Ender's Game series from Orson Scott Card. It is sci-fi, but it is the book that started it all for me. I'm mostly an UF fan now, but I always go back for more Ender. I have also enjoyed Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series. They are a lot more UF. Some others I've read, Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series, and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series - both fantasy. They are good, but not as good as the female authors. :)
@Lily I don't see the comment on her blog :(
What happened to you? A few of us were trying to find you but it's like you disappeared, lol. You can e-mail me if you want. brk.nlssn@gmail.com
@Mandi I've been wanting to check out those books but I haven't yet. Must make note to get those :)
@Becca Boo I've eyed the RA Salvatore books in the store but never taken the leap. Maybe I will soon.
@Anonymous Ok, another vote for Butcher and I really should check out Orson Scott Card. I've know that for awhile now. Gotta kick myself in the butt and do it. :)
@Zelda Oddly enough, I've never read him. *hangs head in shame*
@Sayuri I'm making notes about these right now. I'm getting a lot of votes for Butcher.
@KV getting lots of Butcher and Melton votes. I have some Simon R Green that I've never read, lol. I think some of them are actually his other series and not the Nightside one
Gad, B! Definitely check into Simon R. Green, his books are wonderfully dark UF! And of course, Jim Butcher is a must. Anton Strout's books are damn good, too.
@Wendy BAAAABY! You know what's funny? I have an Anton Strout book and a couple Simon R Green books and I've yet to read them. I'm messed in the head man.
LOL - hubs and I had this discussion last week- he said he's boycotting my blog until I read and review something written by a man. I might peek at your comments and see if anything catches my eye :)
@Patti LOL, go for it. Maybe we can challenge each other to read one of these recs :P
I don't read a lot of male authors either (though I do listen to a lot of male singers/groups). I've heard good things about Mark Henry and Keith Melton, but when I read male authors, I typically read James Patterson, John Grisham, & Dan Brown. I might have more on my bookshelf, but I'm too lazy to get up and look right now, LOL
@Lily OMG WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! I've missed you!
Mark del Franco! UF has two good series out.
I don’t read many male authors either. I really should start.
Oh and I heard today was your birthday.
Happy Birthday!! I hope you have a fabulous day :)
Yeah, we should really get on that :D
Thanks! All the bday love makes me feel extra speshul ;)
I don't read a lot of male authors either but I really like Lee Child's Jack Reacher series.
I deliberately (rather than accidentally) avoid a lot of male authors - simply because many of them can't write a female character to save their lives.
I'll second (third? fourth?) other suggestions for Mark Del Franco, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Though I despised the Harry Dresden books (see above re: female characters).
I recently stumbled upon Adam Troy Castro. He's got two books out in a new series that I am absolutely enthralled with. It is Scifi though, not UF. I suggest giving him a chance.
Hah! Forgot about one of my favorite one-off UF books that just-so-happens to be by a man. I guess I am so used to UF being in a series I don't classify this properly....
Anyway. Solstice byt Ulises Silva. Fantastic book. Thoroughly depressing. Bonus points for including main characters of color (gasp!).
Okay so I will give you somethintg completely smutless but also wonderful (yeah that is possible too)
1. Walter Moers- Witty funny fantasy my favorite is the 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear
2. Sergei Lukyanenko's Watcher series- Russion uf. One of my all time favorites. The first book is Nightwatch. He has a nice love for music and I loved the lyric quotes through the book.
I can't vouche for teh English translations tho cuz I read both on German.
I really like David Weber's Honor Harrington series and agree that Jim Butcher's Dresden files are wonderful. Daniel Silva is another must read.
Weber is probably my favorite. His female characters are very strong but not at the expense of the male character. Having 3 sons, this is important.
Guy Gavriel Kay Fantasy novels, the Fionavar series is one of my all time favorites, Tiganna and everthing else. Actually has a new book out (came out at the end of April) called Under Heaven which I'm enjoying at the moment. Don't hold their gender against them, sometimes men write good books...
HM - I agree with you about Guy Gavriel Kay. I know I was disappointed in one of his standalone books, but the Fionavar series is very good as is Tigana. Maybe it is time to try his new book.
Hmmm...I found a cop of Mark Henry's Happy Hour of the Damned in my TBR - who knew? I guess I'll start with that one :)
The men writers I read are Gresham and Patterson. I guess I need to expand my mind and real others. lol
John Levitt - good UF series beginning with Dog Days.
Jim Butcher also has a high fantasy series with historically Roman touches called the Codex Alera.
Mark Robson's Dragon Orb series - not UF but plain fantasy with dragons in a good way.
Robert Jordon's Wheel of Time, again not UF but still very good.
